Composite Bonding at Castle View

What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental treatment that uses layers of tooth-coloured composite resin (a very similar material that we use to do toothcoloured fillings) to improve the appearance of your teeth. It is a great alternative to ‘traditional crowns or veneers’ as it requires very little or no removal of your natural tooth. The composite resin is placed over the surface of the tooth to repair broken teeth, fill gaps, and disguise cracks, chips & discolouration.

What you need to know about composite
Composite is NOT as strong as a natural tooth, and therefore it can chip or break. You need to be careful not to overload the bonding by doing things like biting your nails, sellotape, clothing labels etc. And it also requires some ongoing maintenance such as occasional polishing to keep it looking its best. You can expect your composite bonding to last around 5-7 years before it needs replacing. However, the great thing about composite is that it can be predictably repaired, unlike porcelain crowns and veneers. Any repairs needed within 12 months of the bonding being done will be carried out free of charge*.

*with the exception of when we specifically say it is not covered

Other factors to consider

Teeth Whitening
If you are considering bonding, give some consideration to teeth whitening first. Remember, composite does not respond to whitening. The last thing we all want is to complete your new smile and then for you to decide you want your teeth whiter.

Invisalign / Teeth Straightening
Often you get a much better bonding result after teeth alignment. Straighter teeth will often need much less bonding, keeping a much more natural appearance.

Also, we can refine the way you bite during tooth alignment, so the bonding has a lower risk of chipping and can be placed where it is needed for the best aesthetic result.

Mock-ups
Not sure about whether to go ahead or not? Want to “try before you buy”? What we can do is a “mock-up” of how your teeth would look. And we can even temporarily transfer this to your teeth so you can look in the mirror at your potential new smile. However, extra charges may apply for this depending on what is required.

Teeth Grinding / Extra Protection                                                                    Are you aware of grinding your teeth? You might do this at night and not even know about it! If so, it would be wise to invest in a splint to protect your bonding (& natural teeth!).

Who does the treatment?

Jeremy Lenaerts does most of the composite bonding treatments at Castle View. Always having an interest in minimally-invasive aesthetic dentistry, he has spent considerable time undergoing more training both in
composite techniques and using Invisalign aligners.
He provides a range of different composite
options such as:
• Free hand bonding
• Stent guided bonding
• Injectable bonding
With a range of skills, he will be able to guide you to the most appropriate treatment.

“I completed my Invisalign and composite bonding treatment recently with Jeremy and the team and I am incredibly happy with results!”

Fee guide

It is really difficult to give prices for composite bonding due to the huge range of treatments. For example, some people only need a minor reshape (enamloplasty/removing a small amount of tooth) which can be included in the consultation fee. For other treatments costs can be well over £1000. Below is a very rough guide to the kind costs you can expect:
• Edge bonding from £125 per tooth
• Composite veneer from £300 per tooth
• Gap Closure from £300

What to do next

If you are interested in pursuing Composite Bonding , the first thing to do is to book an appointment with Laura, our treatment coordinator to discuss your treatment goals and perform a full scan of your teeth using our iTero Scanner.
From this Jeremy will be able to give a rough estimate of how much your treatment will cost. If you are happy with the estimate, you would then book a full consultation with Jeremy for photographs and clinical records.
